Poison-Puffers are enemies in Raft. They are one of multiple threats to the player.

Summary[ | ]

The Poison-Puffer is a small, yellow fish that lives underwater around Large Tropical Islands, Caravan Island, Shipwreck Island, Plane Crash Island and Desert Biome islands. The Poison-Puffer attacks by swimming towards the player, and when it is close enough, it will explode into a large cloud of poison gas, dealing immediate damage and poisoning the player. When killed by the player, the Poison-Puffer drops a Poison-Puffer Head, which is used in the Recipe "Head Broth". When killed by the player, Poison-Puffer also drops one Explosive Goo, with a 33% chance of dropping a second. These can be used to make Explosive Powder. Items are only dropped when killed by the player, not when exploding. Poison-Puffers can typically be spotted just below the surface near a school of Fish. They also emit small bubbles that rise and pop at the surface. Once a Poison-Puffer detects the player, it will follow the player as long as they stay within the area the Poison-Puffer was found. If the player swims far enough away from the Poison-Puffer, it will give up on chasing the player and return to where it was found.

Poison-Puffer Head is used in a cooking pot recipe.

To kill the Poison-Puffer, a Metal Spear or a Bow is recommended, although the bow is definitely the safest. If engaged with multiple fish at a time, swim in circles a few times in order to center the fish and then take them out one at a time using any of the methods below.

Spear

When finding a Poison-Puffer, start the fight by luring it by swimming near it. Back away until ready to attack, then move forward, stab it and immediately move back again in a fluid motion. Repeat.

Bow

Once being chased by the Poison-Puffer, begin backing up and start firing arrows. Keep in mind that arrows travel much slower underwater, so try to not swim too far ahead of the fish before shooting. It is also possible to lead the fish to shallow water. Lure the fish to shallow water and exit the water. The fish will turn around and start to swim away. Once the fish is a safe distance, re-enter the water. The fish will swim either left or right to turn around to attack you. Shoot the fish with the arrows and exit the water when it becomes too close. It is possible to shoot the fish multiple times by repeating this. Another method is to swim upwards, away from the fish, which is the best method to avoid arrow travel distance issues while underwater. Once you fired 3 or 4 metal arrows, depending on difficulty, your reward will be there waiting for you.

Death[ | ]

The Poison-Puffer will imitate blowing up upon being killed, only to flip over. If you are not sure you have killed the Poison-Puffer, it is safer to swim away in case it has not been killed and instead is exploding.

Avoiding the Poison-Puffer[ | ]

  • The Poison-Puffer emits a slow, continuous stream of bubbles that can be heard on the surface. When planning to dive near large islands, listen for the unique sound, and avoid the area.
